Thanks, Allie, for being the greeter for this brunch.

From Citysearch:
"Old Pecan Cafe leads me there by name alone, and captivating aromatic blends of baked goods and coffee drew me in just passing by. When it's time for dining, down-to-earth comfort nestled between old world charm, and but of course palatable options for a dream come true. Their crepes a savory delight with warm banana filing, just a trace of rum with almonds, not pecans, sprinkled just so, and wouldn't a thick gooey chocolate sauce scribbled across it all really complete the divine experience?
Pros: old world charm, not a buttoned-up affair and friendly"

Review From www.tacotown.org:

"Everybody has their own list of creature comforts- small and sometimes guilty pleasures that provide an escape from the stresses of modern times and keep us generally miserable humans from committing hara-kiri.

Maria's has always been a creature comfort for me and many other 78704sters.

My Sunday afternoons have seen many a chorizo/egg/cheese taco placed in my hung-over belly. In fact, in the humble opinion of Cabeza De Taco, Maria's makes the best chorizo bar none.

Here's a little history lesson: Taco Xpress has been the de-facto taco joint on South Lamar since Maria spent her 1997 tax return on a little taco trailer.

From there, popularity and square footage grew to include a small shack and patio with strange folk art, carnival facades, and a rickety stage for the Sunday gospel brunch, which featured a who's who of taco-loving Austin songwriters. The lines were always long (usually snaking out the front door) and the food was always good.

Fast forward to present day, thanks to the new CVS pharmacy next door (and their deep pockets) Taco Xpress has moved about 100 feet into a completely new building. Thankfully, they transplanted much of the same tripped-out folk-art sculptures and junkyard coziness from the original. I'm sure it'll get broken in nicely over time.

If you're there for breakfast- like i said- get the chorizo egg & cheese taco. Its greasy hangover curin' taco heaven.

Everything's good here.

The refried beans are exactly what you'd expect- the queso is perfect consistency, the chips are good, and the Mexican rice is above-average. I've yet to taste a Maria's dish that doesn't stand up."

From Yelp
"I must say that they have the best goat cheese salad I've ever had. It has 4 fried goat cheese balls on a bed of greens with blackberries, strawberries, and other fruit. It was a fantastic combination and worth a return trip. "
"I can say they serve up an awesome brunch menu. I have experienced an above average omelet w/ baby spinach and portabella shrooms sauteed in garlic and white wine before being folded into my eggs. The Fruit Pancakes or Waffles topped with fresh seasonal fruit and whipped cream is an 'I've died and gone to heaven' experience."

From austinist.com "We've been craving crepes as good as those we've enjoyed in France, and Flip Happy delivers on this front. We tried a savory crepe of the traditional ham and gruyere cheese with carmelized onions and spinach, which was very delectable. Then, another day we came back for dessert and got one that was filled with Nutella and bananas with a dollop of whipped cream on top.

When we mentioned to a French friend that these crepes were as good as the ones we'd had in France, he responded that they were even better. We don't want to argue with the French on any gastronomic matters, and we can't knock ingredients 'made from scratch with love,' so we'll just have to add this to our list of affordable favs in South Austin and let our readers decide that for themselves. "

This isn't a reservations kind of place so there's no RSVP limit. The trick is to be close to our meeting time of 11am. Flip Happy tells me once you get closer to noon that there could be an hour wait.

Reviews of Taverna:

"Taverna epitomizes new generation chic Italian bistros."
The Dallas Morning News

"Like the best Italian couture, Taverna embodies a kind of effortless hipness . It took vision, planning and effort to create Taverna's vintage Italian interiors, the I-want-one-of-everything menu and the accessible and enticing wine list. Nothing about Taverna seems contrived.

"There's a reason there's a wait at Taverna. It's a great place to eat, watch people and just enjoy yourself. The atmosphere alone is worth a visit."

"Z Tejas is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. The food is a combination of Tex-Mex, Southwestern, something or another but what it comes down to is that it's consistently good."

"This restaurant was a very pleasant surprise. It exceeded my expectations in many ways. The food is very artfully prepared. It is unbelievably inexpensive for what you get"
